Position Summary

The Graphic Designer, Digital will join a team of professionals dedicated to informing sexual and reproductive health and rights policies and public debates in the United States and globally, and will contribute to producing evidence-based, high-quality resources and developing a strong multimedia and online presence that invites and engages Guttmacher’s wide range of audiences. The graphic designer will serve as part of a digital and design team, collaborating with programmatic, web, development, and finance & administration staff to conceive, design and produce a wide range of graphics. They will be responsible for generating a variety of collaterals including (but not limited to) data visualizations, interactive graphics, videos and presentations for primary application on digital platforms, including Guttmacher’s website and social media channels. The design team is responsible for adherence to the Institute’s brand and consistency across platforms. The team will periodically work with outside design consultants for major publications and website projects. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Brainstorm, draft and design static graphics and animations for social media, including data visualization products, incorporating feedback from key stakeholders across the Institute.
  • Collaborate with the in-house web team to create data visualizations and infographics in both static and interactive formats.  
  • Manage design requests, develop production schedules and track workflow from request through multiple review stages and completion. 
  • Conceptualize and produce digital promotional materials for events, conferences and other needs.
  • Partner with staff to design and refine graphics for PowerPoint presentations.
  • Perform other reasonably related job duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

Required Skills

  • Experience in creating sophisticated storytelling pieces that visualize complex concepts for non-technical audiences. 
  • Experience in designing high-quality visual content (static and video) and campaigns optimized for social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, Threads, LinkedIn, and YouTube). 
  • Familiarity with responsive design and optimizing graphics for adaptive web use, including mobile devices.
  • Experience in integrating feedback from diverse teams and managing multiple stakeholders' inputs.
  • Advanced skills in Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop), Canva, and Microsoft PowerPoint,
  • Ability to work under deadlines and manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Creativity, dedication, professionalism, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3–5 years in graphic design, interaction design, or a related field, with a focus on visual content development.
  • Ability to accurately interpret social science data and policy concepts.
  • Ability to design graphics with accessibility in mind, ensuring compatibility with screen readers and other assistive technologies.
  • Understanding of basic coding principles, especially HTML and Drupal, as they relate to design.
  • Basic project management skills, especially in managing design projects from concept to completion.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Microsoft SharePoint and R.
  • Experience with video editing tools.
  • Knowledge of user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design principles, particularly for interactive content.
  • Proficiency in motion graphics or animation tools (e.g., After Effects), given the role's digital focus.
  • Proven experience working closely with cross-functional teams, such as marketing, development, and content teams, to align design projects with broader organizational goals.
  • Understanding of search engine optimization (SEO) and how design elements can impact digital visibility.

 

Salary and Benefits

The starting salary for this position is $80,886.24 to $130,121.34 and will be commensurate with experience. This is a union position. The Guttmacher Institute practices a hybrid work schedule, requiring in-office attendance 8 days per month at our NYC location. The range for this position is specific to New York and DC, but base pay may vary depending on a wide range of factors, including experience, skill sets, and training.
