Summary:

Reporting to Director of Data Strategy, the Manager, Data Science at Building Service 32BJ Benefit Funds will lead a small team of data scientists in developing and deploying predictive models and statistical solutions that support the organization's operational and strategic goals. This role blends hands-on technical work, team leadership, and close collaboration with business stakeholders to translate real-world problems into data-driven solutions.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience in traditional data science techniques such as regression, classification, clustering, and forecasting. They will also be skilled in guiding junior staff, communicating insights to non-technical audiences, and shaping the structure and quality of data inputs for model development. Experience with AI/ML techniques is a plus but not required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and mentor a team of 2–3 data scientists, supporting both their technical development and day-to-day project execution.
  • Build and maintain predictive and statistical models using techniques such as regression, classification, clustering, and time series forecasting.
  • Translate complex business problems into clear, actionable data science projects in collaboration with internal stakeholders.
  • Provide guidance on data requirements for modeling, including input structure, cleanliness, and completeness, to ensure model reliability and effectiveness.
  • Develop reproducible and scalable data science workflows using Python and SQL.
  • Support the design and execution of development pipelines using modern cloud-based platforms and tools.
  • Evaluate and refine existing models to improve performance in response to changing business needs and to address model drift as data and underlying patterns evolve over time.
  • Communicate technical findings and insights in a clear and meaningful way to non-technical audiences.
  • Promote best practices in coding, model validation, and collaboration within the data science team.
  • Stay informed about industry trends in data science and analytics; exposure to AI/ML approaches is a plus.

Technical Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in data science, with a strong focus on predictive modeling and statistical analysis.
  • Prior experience mentoring or managing junior data scientists or analysts.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL for data analysis, modeling, and data pipeline development.
  • Experience developing and deploying data science workflows on modern cloud-based platforms (e.g., Databricks, Azure, AWS, or GCP).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a practical focus on measurable business impact.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical insights to stakeholders with varying levels of data fluency.
  • Experience working with data in healthcare, health benefits, insurance, or financial services is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML techniques or tooling is preferred, though not required.

Work Ethic & Values:

  • Values mentorship, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Demonstrates initiative and ownership of both team development and project outcomes.
  • Strives for transparency, reproducibility, and high-quality deliverables.
  • Thrives in a mission-driven, cross-functional environment.
